OK yall...what did you think? They could have had less of Shelley and Otis and more of Sandra and the girls. It seems like Otis is going to his grave trying to make Ruffin the bad guy. I think Jr did well. "my dad needed love but he got fame." That was a heavy statement. I've got so much more to say. brb

Bees,
I actually preferred the interview David's family did with David Washington earlier today. It was excellent. I thought the radio interview was more insightful because the family shared stories and provided new information about David that I never knew. Also, Mr. Washington was an an excellent interviewer and asked the right questions.
I ignored Shelly's comments because I was not interested in hearing what he had to say.
That said, I did enjoy hearing David Ruffin Jr. speak though.

I was excited when it came on but I walked away feeling like I..I don't know like they focused more on his bad issues and less on the good. but I did like how mrs.sandra let it be known she was still married to him when he was seeing genna I was like oh damn shots fired lol glad she cleared that up. nedra looks exactly like her father.

Yes, I too think they focused too much on the dark side of David. I didn't mind what they said, but it was not balanced enough. I wanted to hear more stories of how he was a loving, caring father and husband. But this episode is pretty much what I was expecting. Jr. is quite charismatic I think, gets it from his father! And I appreciated all his comments; I think he is quite mature about the whole situation. For me, the line was when he said " I loved my father so much because.....he really needed it." But Nedra just broke my heart. I hope she can find peace at some point. Her father is at peace now.

Just saw the Unsung episode online. Here are my thoughts:
I'll start by saying that I really wasn't 'surprised' by how it turned out. I was ambivalent about an episode on David in the first place but at least, it's been done.
*I was disappointed that there were no kid pics of David. It sounds like Jimmy or Quincy may have had those. *sigh*
*Glad Ms. Sandra was able to speak on their relationship. I think Unsung should have given her more airtime to speak about how they met and how he proposed to her.
*Thank goodness they did not harp on the David and Tammi relationship.
*Happy that David's daugthers talked about what kind of father of he was. It's obvious they loved him.
*Too much O, Shelly B and the wanna be widow and not enough Ms. Sandra and her daughters. I also can't figured out why Dr. Quincy, his children or even Jimmy were not invited to participate on the program. Particularly, Dr. Quincy.
*Glad somebody FINALLY told the truth that Motown 'quietly' sabatoged his career. It wasn't just the drugs and yada, yada and his ego. He wanted OUT and Motown RUFF-USED to let him out of his contract.
*Shelly B should thank his lucky stars that he has/had the job he had 'managing' The Supremes & The Temptations. For a 'failed' actor who got his job by who he knew and not what knew, makes me take his comments with a grain of salt. I also don't buy what O is selling EITHER. All those Tempts had egos, they all wanted to be stars. Yes, Eddie and Paul sang leads but David's voice was on the majority of the hits. I still can't understand why O is still peeved because David didn't want to ride with them anymore or that he had his own friends (as dubious as they were). O hanged out with Melvin; Eddie with Paul. So I don't get what his problem is. Yeah, David's head was swollen with ambition but it wasn't any different than Miss Diane Ross. At one point, she had her own dressing room while she was in the group. He's still upset over a car that David paid for with his money. Smells like jealousy to me!
*Very surprised at jr's comments. I thought he handled himself very well and he geniunely seemed to love his father.
More I would like to say but I'll just stop for now.....

Having watched the programme earlier today I agree that the David Washington radio show was much better. I thought a lot of the stuff on Unsung was regurgitated and it wasn't till the last five mins or so when his children spoke that you got to hear about the private side of DR. David Jr came across well and you could see he was sad about people saying his dad died in a crackhouse and why wasn't information out there about David and his family/children. But hey I enjoyed watching David again - what a superstar!

Common, ITA with all your thoughts. You outlined what I think/feel perfectly. Yes, I'm disappointed Quincy & Jimmy were not included, but perhaps they knew intuitively that the show was not "in depth" enough and they chose not to participate for that reason. Dunno.

Well at least this wasn't all negative. I was happy that the family got to speak on his behalf and that he was a real human being instead of a crazed monster. He was actually someone's boyfriend...husband...father...and friend Common I found it interesting that Genna got more air time than Sandra. I knew she wouldn't miss an opportunity to be the victimized widow. This is one reason I was glad David Washington had them on his show because they got a chance to air their feelings regarding this very matter. I really understand why Ruffin wanted top billing. Diane and Smokey got it...why couldn't Ruff? Afterall he was the front man. But I also understand that Eddie was also sing lead and that would cause conflict. How many leads did Paul and Melvin sing? Is Jimmy Lee's son fine or what??? Just like JL used to look! Shelley and Oatass come off as two bitter old gossiping hens. You would think they would get tired of regurgitating the same old stuff! Did he really have to mention Dean Martin's daughter? And someone (I'm not mentioning any names) sitting up there talking about Ruffin's drug use but at the time they were using too. How soon we forget. I also thought Jr did a great job...seems he has matured a lot. I loved it when he looked in the camera and said 'my father did not die in a crack house.'

Sad for Jr? Me too kind of cuz it seemed like he didn't get the same affection and nurturing as the girls. Genna said he abused him but I heard Ruff treated him like that because he was too soft and was trying to toughen him up. But like Jr said a lot of black families treated their kids like that. I know my daddy would tear dat ass up! My brothers would get beat with anything my parents got their hands on be it a chair...a belt...a shoe...extension cord...a skillet...and guess what? they would still do the same thing! But Jr does appear to have a forgiving and loving spirit.

Rufferino - Nedra looked very sad in the program. Usually, she's a upbeat and talkative person. I wish we could see the unedited portions to get more to what she said. She tends to be very forward.
Bees, In a sense, I agree it could have been worse. I, too, was peeved that the daughters were barely given any airtime. I was like, what's up with the little snippets here and there?? Anyway, I got the sense that it was difficult for all of David's children. Especially, Lynette. I think she wanted to say more but it was hard for her. I think talking about her father brings up a lot of emotions for her. I really felt for all of them actually. It is never easy having a parent that has an addiction plus being famous. Then adding scandal on top of it, makes it even harder. But I was also happy that they were able to share another side of him: kind, happy-go-lucky, funny and outgoing. I was hoping they also talked about David's sense of humor. People said he was a very funny person.
Jimmy Jr was so excited, I thought he was going to come through the screen. LOL. He really loves his uncle and I think he was happy that his uncle was finally getting his props. He seems like a nice guy!

Common that's what I was saying about how they will edit the show. It's all about sound bites.....notice that nobody stayed on camera very long. Except Oatass and Shelley!!! Jeez. Oatass sounds like a broken record and Shelley just sounds like a whiny little brat. But looking at it from the tv producers viewpoint - it's all about getting usable sound bites. The format of the show is to keep it moving along, quickly, and advance the story line using different people's soundbites mixed in with narration. I thought I read on this board somewhere that somebody named Martha (??) was thinking about doing a longer format. I sure hope somebody does who can do a good job.
