Which Tempt member had the baddest AFRO?
Which Tempt brother AFRO was well put together when he step on the stage.. you said he has it going on.
Also what year did people start wearing the AFRO??
What did the AFRO hair style symbolize for people of color.
Finally board, did you wear the afro or the puffs.. the part down the middle and the puff on each side..

Eddie and Paul wore their hair short. We first called it "Natural". That hairstyle became popular late 60's early 70's. I had a big fro I never wore the puffs. This was during the time of racial unrest. ie The Panther Movement ect. It was a show of Ethnic Pride.

When The Temptations stepped on stage all of them were groomed. Hair, clothes everything! Molly Melvin had a nice fro too. I sported a natural too. That hairstyle took a lot of maintenance.

I had a fro too...two afro puffs...and one big one with a shoestring tied around it. I'm glad that phase is over for me. I got so tired of braiding and rolling my hair up...then going to the barbershop to get it shaped. Lawd...if it got too humid...it was droopy. It was not as carefree as it appeared...it took a lot of maintenance...that is, if you wanted to look like Pam Grier! ;D

Queenie...where I'm from, that was the way we did things. You just used a black shoestring...the thin kind...and pulled it around your head until it took the form of an afro puff. It turned out perfect with that shoestring. You could use either a shoestring or a comb...but the comb wasn't as tight as the shoestring. I wish I could get to my pictures...I would show you how I looked with that big puff in the middle of my head! ;D Girl, please...you couldn't tell me nuffin! ;D
If you think that's something...you should have seen my cousin. She had hair like The Sylvers. She used to tie a man's tie around her fro and and let it hang down the side of her head. It looked like a ribbon under all her thick hair! ;D

Shoestring?? You mean there were no pretty colored ribbons back in the day? My grandma used to put these ribbons that were made out of cotton. Do you remember those? And they came in different colors?

And they came in different colors? The shoestring was not supposed to be seen. It was used to form the hair into a ball...something like a rubberband but it wasn't tight. Just tie a shoestring around your head and see what shape your hair forms. You start loose and depending on how tight and how fat you wanted your puff,,,then you tied the knot...real simple. You probably can't picture it cuz you can't get past the shoestring.

www.nappturality.com/modules/myalbum/Scroll down and look at Melanzim's afro puff. That's the effect you get with the shoestring...or bet yet...it might look like Thelma (on Good Times) puff. BTW...the site has some nice articles on hair care.

O had the biggest I know that from pics ... Melvin's was medium not to big but not small ... And he had more then a part on the left hand side (matter of fact he had that part all the time with a process or fro)... Lemme find pics and show ya: See his part ... That stayed through the fro too ... I can't find a pic now ... But I described it if that helps ... David's fro was nice ... Eddie ... He had a receding harline I noticed (even in the 60's) but it never went any farther back ... Paul ... Did paul do afros?
