I got the book "Ain't Too Proud To Beg: The Troubled Lives And Enduring Soul of The Temptations" today, but I've only skimmed so far. I can already tell that the author has his lips firmly placed on Otis' a$$, and he believes EVERYTHING that Otis tells him and has him pegged as the mature, level-headed leader of the group. I can also already tell that DR is gonna be portrayed as that same drug crazed, womanizing, woman beating, ego trippin' out, lying monster that he's always portrayed as. Paul is portrayed as the sad, tortured alcoholic with a heart of gold; Eddie is the private, mama's boy who hated Otis, BG, and Motown with a bloody passion; and Melvin as the goofy sidekick to Otis. Not much depth, a lot of hearsay, and I've already found a pretty big error in the author's facts (and I've only skimmed lol)...that's my critique of this book so far. You guys love DR so you're gonna totally hate this book lol! Later

Hi Duchess,
I already determined that when I read the Introduction the author provided at Amazon. That is the reason why I refuse to purchase this book. How many times can people keep recylcing the same nonsense, rumors, innuendo, hearsay?
I thought Otis already told his version of the Temptations story in his book. So why is there a need for another book about the Temptations written by an author who was not even a member of the group and who has no choice but to rely on Otis for information because David, Eddie, Paul and Melvin are dead?
As far as the error you noticed, there could possibly be more because according to some, his book about the Supremes contained a few too.
That said, enjoy reading the book!

Hey Duchess!
This doesn't surprise me one bit. Most of these writers who write about these Motown artists, seem to feel like because artists travel with each other, they must know each other. The temptations book sounds like O & genna redux, reguritating the same b.s. that they put in their trashy books. This book sounds like trash too. For all those folks who hate Tony Turner's guts for his 'books, at least, he didn't hide the 'trashiness'. I rather a person be straight with the trash then try and disguise it as some kind of 'legitimate' rehash of music history.

BTW, all those Tempts were 'womanizers' so I don't know why they try make it like it was only Ruffin. It sounds like jealousy to me because some of them pulled in more ladies more than others. ;D

That was the difference between David and the rest of the Tempts. Otis never got major pussy. Melvin, Paul, Eddie; they had to settle for lesser pussy. David got major pussy. Let me tell you, Tammi Terrell was major pussy. As for the pictures, Common, no dice! The pictures suck! There all black & white and most of them are of Otis and the Imitations. The few pictures of the classic Temps, we have all seen before. Although there is one pic of Otis sitting at his "drawing table" with a drawing of the classic Temps that is incredible! If Otis drew that, I think I've finally found his talent! Otis can't sing worth a damn, but that man can draw really, really well!

...BTW, more book excerpts to come! But I gotta post Nedra's comment about Otis & the Temps movie right now because it had me laughing and SMDH all at the same time: Not everyone consecrates him, of course. For David's daughter Nedra Ruffin, the very mention of the sole surviving original Temptation sets her off. "Otis wrote a book and did a movie based on a bunch of doggone fiction!" she begins. "And for all that, he did not give my daddy's kids a dime. He blocked any profits from us. [In that way] he took millions from us. My daddy left us broke, man. We're just average persons trying to make it on a daily basis and meanwhile for the last seventeen years people have written things making money off my dad's name. And Otis, the only person he gave money to was Melvin's wife."
Having lost the lawsuit against the movie, she vows to keep fighting that fight. "I'm gonna talk to my attorney to see what we can do."
Then, changing gears on a dime, she asks, "Do we get profits off this book?" It's not all about the money, baby! It's not all about the money! That's all I have to say

That's all I have to say I hope that she isn't only concerned about the money. I would be very angry about people constantly dragging my father's name through the mud more than anything. It's definitely unfortunate that his kids can't benefit from the great music he's done and the stories that people have told about him, but I can't really feel bad for her living like "average persons" because aren't most of us just average people? She should try to make her OWN fortune if she's that concerned about money. Why don't she try to tell her father's story? The Ruffin kids should get together and do a documentary or something. I was actually going to present this idea to Jr. the other day. If no talks of a Ruffin doc comes up within the next year, I'm going to try to do my own web documentary about him.

So basically, it's the same ol' Tempts pics we've seen over and over and over and over again! Yuck! On the quote: You have got to be joking me? Is this what's in the book??? It sounds like one of those street "literature'' books that are hot now. Who the heck writes like that about a groundbreaking African American singing group? And why are women in that paragraph only described as 'pussy'?? The writer didn't have repeat verbatim what Billy Wilson said. No need to disrespect Tammi like that either. Sheesh! While I know who Billy Wilson is, was he back with the Tempts back when? It sounds like this so-called 'author' went and got moe, larry and curly for this book. I knew it sounded like a bunch of crazy when I saw the index.

Common,
I concur with your sentiment. I was thinking "Does this author really expect me to take this book seriously when he refers to Tammi Terrel as "major pussy". I mean, his he serious in allowing that quote to be published about a woman who has recorded some of the best duets in music history? How offensive and crude. I mean, how much lower and trifling can a book about the Temptations go.

I mean, how much lower and trifling can a book about the Temptations go. I can see where you're coming from...BUT people have referred to better people as things much worse. I doubt if Terrell was the angel that some like to make her out to be. She was pretty and recorded great duos, but that shouldn't exempt her from criticism if its deservering. Personally, I don't think that particular comment was meant to be demeaning, but I can see how some would think it objectifies her. Also, just because a person has a blunt style of writing, that doesn't mean that their intentions are bad. On the other hand, someone who is politically correct could be up to no good, lying through his teeth, etc. So we should take everyting with a grain of salt, but what I find is that the ones who try to act perfect (Otis for example) are the main ones who have hidden agendas while people who just "tell it like it is" are simplying doing just that...telling it like it is. So if he said David got major pussy, that's what he meant. lol No need to water it down and try to be politically correct.
