I know there are a lot of similar topics abot this. I'm pretty new to this place though, and it can get quite confusing trying to dig through different threads. So, I apologize if this seems redundant. How many people here either met or knew David personally? What kind of a person was he? Was he easy to get along with, and approach on the street? I know this might be personal, and you guys can ignore it if you want, but I'm a little curios about something. Did anybody here witness David's "alter ego" like in the mini series? If it's not to much to ask, could I hear some stories about how you guys met him, and got to know him?

Jay, please read "The Ruffin Story and The Blind Man Story" thread you will find stories tht catch the essence of the RUFFAN MAN. Also, Jay keep in mind you were looking at miniseries about some one who wants to be like David. Therefore; he is going to make David look like the mad guy but in reality O was the mad guy.

Hello Jay There are at least 5 people on this board that knew or met Ruffin. He was very approachable and charismatic. He was a very funny person. He would say things that would have you laughing for days. He would crack me up even when he was trying to be serious. I feel very lucky to have known him. Ruffin was an entertainer so of course he had a "ego". I can say that he did interact with O differently then he did with friends, fans ect. Ruffin knew what he bought to the group so did O,and Ruffin never had a problem reminding O of that. I have heard many people say the mini series showed him as being arrogant and egotistical. I didn't get that. I saw a talented man that played a big part of a groups success, wanting to be recognized as such. O didn't want the groups name to change. But he didn't have a problem "riding" Ruffin's talent to the top. None what so ever. It is true that there were things that Ruffin could have/should have handled differently. But the same can be said for every member in the group. I think O came off looking worse than he tried to make Ruffin look. Power Hungry,Jealous,Petty and the Least Talented.

Hello Jay: Kindly remember that the miniseries was told from Otis' point of view, and Otis never sang leads in hit songs. Otis understood that he would always be a nobody, unless he got a hold of the name "The Temptations." To do that, he had to pick off one by one anyone who could stand in his way. Moreover, he had to portray David as egotistical. But to be great, you need a good, healthy ego. Does this make sense?

It makes a whole lot of sense Andy! Maybe that's something O doesn't have a lot of. ;D But seriously, O did not really have any 'power' until he had gotten rid of The Big Three. In all honesty and sincerity, would you want to take on David, Eddie, and Paul? I don't think so! The old divide and conquer game.

LOL ... I never looked at it that way ... And Eddie may have been quite ... But I know you said something that made him mad ... He would be in your face about it ... ... and David ... WHEW! ... If he had a problem ... I know he'd letcha know it! :ups: ... and paul ... Paul would be the first one to knock ya out! :bonk: ..... Otis ... would sit in a coner in the fetal position and cry himself to sleep ... So getting rid of the three "Tough" ones ... Gave him power ;D

Hey guys...I don't mean to be rude or anything, since I just got here, but can we try to focus less on Otis for a minute please? ;D I know Otis has his faults, but my goal for this thread was to get an idea of what David "the man" was, versus David "the entertainer". What was he like off the stage? Was he a family man? You know, stuff about his home life, rather than his life as a singer.

But his attitude for the most part was very positive. His greatest security was in his talent. He knew he had it,and the stage belonged to him. He was a showman. David could be ill and still put on a great show. His home life was much like any other persons. He liked to cook, watch TV,listen to music ect. He loved his kids, and was very proud of them. Also even though he and his first wife Sandra was divorced they still had a special type of relationship. David befriended many people. He never let his star status keep him from enjoying the company of friends that were not in the entertainment industry. He was very charismatic and needless to say he loved the ladies and they loved him. Otis was bought up in this thread because of the reference made to the mini-series. Like Molly said David had a ego,but it was because he was so dang talented.

And without a lil ego he woulda never made it ... You gotta know you are the best ... and work the hardest to get to the top ... David did that ... But far as I know ... He was like everyone else ... Good days, Bad days ... HAppy and sad days ... But from what I learned from this board ... Friendly and caring more then he had to be ... He knew his fans friends and family put him on top ... and he let them know it ;D

The entertainment industry is full of rejections without a ego a person would just give up. Ruffin had a ego,but then so did O. Difference was Ruffin had Talent. Ruffin appreciated the fans and friends. Instead of an ego O should have been humble and grateful. Because there is not dang way O would have enjoyed the success he did without Ruffin,Eddie and Dennis. No! Way!!!!

Board...
I agree with the comments regarding this thread.. You have to have an ego to survive in the world. Remember when David started with the Tempts he was a background singer... The man said I have way to much talent to be back here. I need to be in the front with Eddie and Paul. Everyone knows the story DER sung their first number hit 'My Girl'.
