Hey Board,,, Did David mention his parents names.. Did his parents enjoy David's success?? Is David parent still living if so where?? Which parent did David inherited his voice?? Hey Sunshine...David's birth mother's name was Ophelia. She died in child birth or there about. His father's name was Eli. His step-mother's name was Earline. I am sure Eli enjoyed David's success, since he himself and Jimmy, David, Quincy and Rita Mae sang together in a gospel group. I hope that is correct, that is what I was told... His stepmother Earline, I guess she was proud of David. However, she didn't like how the perils of stardom destroyed David. She missed seeing David also. He did get back to Mississippi, although not often. His birth mother, his dad and stepmother are all deceased. So is his sister Rita Mae. Never heard his parents sing, but I guess it came from ELi since he was in gospel music.

No I was not aware.. why did Jimmy choose Permalube?? Hey Sunshine, I assumed it was because of the hairstyle of the time, the pompadour, and what it took to keep it styled...:-)

QNDF, most the info about David's parents can be found in Genna's book. And no one knows for sure how accurate SOME of her info is. Jimmy also had another nickname for David, which I'm not going to repeat. David's Stepmom was, according to an now defunct article that featured David's daughters, was still alive around the time of the miniseries. She is now deceased, though don't know when that happened.
I don' think David's father was alive when he became famous. Rita died a year before David's passing. You need to pick up(so do I!) a copy of David's eldest brother, Dr. Quincy Ruffin's 'Mississippi Tears' if you want to know about the Ruffin family history. Obviously, he will provide more facts that what genna put in her book.
Here's the info to purchase Dr. Quincy's book:
Mississippi Tears: A collection of poetry & essays by Quincy Ruffin
$10 plus $2 postage $1 additional 4 copies postage
Make Checks & Money Orders payable to:
Dr. Quincy Ruffin PO Box 682093 Orlando, Fl 32868
Allow 14 days for delivery ******************************
QNDF, since you are right in the area, it probably will take less time for delivery. Enjoy!

Common once again you are right. Ruffin's step mother was the only party in the lawsuit that prevailed. David never talked that much about his father in my presence. Jimmy seemed to be Ruffin's father figure. Ruffin's father was dead before David's success. Genna wrote a little about Ruffin's child hood and family, Most of which I believe she did research to find out. She never said Ruffin told her any of these things. I don't know at what point in Ruffin's life that he returned to Mississippi.I was never aware that he went back. Genna said in her book his step mother visited once when she was with him.LOL!LOL! Jimmy did have a nick name for Ruffin.LOL! He called his baby brother Da-Da. I always thought that was cute. Common is right Quincy's book would provide more accurate information about their famly history then the little found in genna's book.

I know because he called me from there. He told me he saw relatives while there, I had no reason to doubt him...

I know I spoke to this lady twice over the phone. She always wanted David {Davis} as she called him to come see her. I would always tell him he should go see her,he would always say he was. I can say that he did not visit her during the years we were together,I would have been right there with him. ;D Molly I have heard David speak of his father,on rare occassions. I never got the impression that they were close. He would however speak of a Uncle Charlie{ I never met him} with affection. ;D

Thanks Common for the info I will be buying the book. I thought Jimmy was oldest of the Ruffin Clan see what I know NOTHING. Only two Ruffins are living Jimmy and brother Quincy?? Is David the baby of the clan??
Even though David did not have good relationship with his dad, I am glad Jimmy where there to provide the support David needed. What is the age difference in the two men. I know Jimmy is the oldest of the two couple years?

Molly, I'm quite interested as to who may have provided you-know-who with the info for the 'book'. I'm not doubting that she didn't research it but considering the fact that obviously David didn't share this info with her, I guess I'm curious to know who did?? I'm sure they regret it now! I'm also wondering how Quincy is coming along with the plans in MS. I know these things take time but I wonder if they have a blueprint or design created for the statue. Man, I can't wait until this happens.

If you don't want to answer here, I understand.
