Do you think a project like this would be worthwhile? Do you think anyone/body could catch the essence of who David was on screen? What do you think? Opinions and thoughts, please.

I think it would be a worthwhile project depending on whose producing it. If it's family...we know for sure it would be slanted toward the 'good' David. They have a more clear picture of who he really was but I don't think they would be willing to expose that to the public for fear of heavy scrutinizing and passing judgement. If someone other than family produced...it might be slanted to make him a monster as most do when discussing him. It would have to be someone who was really objective and fair. I don't want him to be cast like he was in the mini series even tho I'd like to see him in rare 'ruff' form...the story would have to be balanced. I want to see him as a husband...father...friend...lover...as well as an entertainer...not some caricature of him ackin a fool. I want to see him brushing Cheryl's hair...teaching Nedra to ride a bike...and at the house singing with Kim and the rest of the kids...in the studio working hard. I just want him to be human.

I agree with you said but you know that anything involves Hollywood, takes liasion with a famous person's life story. Ray, for example, was alright but it seemed like it made it a point to focus on Charles' infidelity and his drug habit. The music, as usual, was not the focal point. It's also made a point to mention Charles' 'business dealings' in almost sinister way. But it also had do with Charles himself, since it was said that he was a guarded person. The point I'm getting at is that you really didn't 'know' Ray Charles. We know of him and his contribution but even though Foxx got him down to his walk and singing voice, I just never 'felt' Charles. And I wonder how could the essence of David be captured because David, unlike Charles, was pretty much under the radar plus folks had pretty much made up their mind as to what 'kind' of person they thought he was instead of what he actually was. Hollyweird has to sensationalized a person because they think that's what the public wants to see. David had alot of drama in his life but Hollyweird would try to blow it up 10 times more than what it was.

I think a movie would be good and in it they should show all sides of him..from his childhood and to how he became who he was. I think Leon should play him again because I don't know any actor that could capture his look or mannerisms. I know when I was young my father would tell me all about David Ruffin everytime he played the Tempts songs..he would talk about how awesome that man was on the stage and on the mic. I know I would go see it if it's in the theaters or watch it if it's a made for tv movie. I hope they would bring the truth not no made up crap about him.

Personally, I think such a project would be worthwhile among David Ruffin fans, as I know I would be grateful to watch a movie that would capture the human being David Ruffin. Shoot, I have been waiting for a book of this nature for so long. As far as the actor that I think should play the role, I tend to agree with B, with Leon. I, like the rest of us, would like to see the real David. That would be so awesome! I'm too tired of exaggerrated, ignorant, made up fantasies . I do think in order for a movie to be made like this, It would have to be a collaborative effort, with honest, fair (like bees said) people that would like to reveal the truth, good, bad, ugly or indifferent, and not so much emphasis on one subject, that almost always tend to be 'The drug addiction of David Ruffin'. Research would have to be done. Did David talk much about his past/ childhood? Anyway Interesting topic and I sure do hope that something like this could/would come out. Der68, Molly *cough* yall interested in participating? ;D

Truthfully I don't think it's going to happen. Because I'm sure they are going to expose how Berry Gordy ripped a lot of the Motown artist off and nobody seems to want to talk about this. And Love Berry for his accomplishments and dreams but he ripped his artist off, plain and simple.
This is gonna result in why David's solo career was not as successful because while he was in the Tempts he brought up the money situation to Berry Gordy.
"Dream Girls" was a separate movie and Smokey publicly denounced it because he said the manager in the movie represented Berry Gordy and the manager was dirty and a crook.

Hello Ruffin fans, I'm a newcomer here. I've been following these posts for a little while, but it was the question about making a movie about David's life that motivated me to join in the discussion! Ever since the Tempts movie, I've been wishing that this would happen--and I agree wholeheartedly wtih BeesNVme about wanting to see Ruff as a whole person. From everything I've read about him (and between the lines) if a producer really focused on who he is, that would make such a compelling story that it would draw more people in to want to find out about his music. I nominate Quincy Jones as co-producer. It would also be good to have David's oldest brother, Quincy Ruffin's input to the screenplay, as he is a writer (I have his book Mississippi Tears). There's just so much to this story and many parts of it are so common to many R&B & soul artists.
