Sad for Jr? Me too kind of cuz it seemed like he didn't get the same affection and nurturing as the girls. Genna said he abused him but I heard Ruff treated him like that because he was too soft and was trying to toughen him up. But like Jr said a lot of black families treated their kids like that. I know my daddy would tear dat ass up! My brothers would get beat with anything my parents got their hands on be it a chair...a belt...a shoe...extension cord...a skillet...and guess what? they would still do the same thing! But Jr does appear to have a forgiving and loving spirit. I felt sad for David and all of them actually because they were robbed of so much and it's not right. his kids don't have their father anymore. you're absolutely right switches from off the tree omg I still got a scar from when my mother tore my legs up with one lol

I see on other websites that Unsung has received mixed reviews.

The entire episode was a tear jerker for me. David jr seems like he kinda got the short end of the stick. Maybe because he was the only boy and he needed to be tough. However it seems like he was too young to get beat in any manner. It's true that many black Americans can share beat down storys. But,sometimes people can go too far. Any ways, it was very nice to see David's beautiful daughters speak so highly of their father. I wish that Sandra received more air time. I don't feel that she got enough time to really express her feelings about the situation. Otis is just Otis. Geena is the same, she did not change one bit. Overall, I left with the conculsion that David had many insecurities of his self, and it was very hard for him to face his demons. So he stayed numb to suppress the pain. A very complex person, sometimes difficult to deal with. Through all, he was a kind, loving person.

Very well stated, lovechild. The whole thing comes off as a sad story. Feedback from a couple friends who didn't know anything about David said that it was a sad story, David seemed tortured, etc. This is why I still feel that a more in-depth biography needs to be done about David. There's more to his story!!

After looking at the "full" episode online I'm realizing there's some stuff missing. I remember somebody saying something about how David loved all of his women: Sandra, Genna, Tammi. I don't see that in the posted version. I wonder what else is missing.

I wish Davids wife and daughters would have had more air time. It makes me wonder how David could be a loving husband and father to his wife and daughters and a monster to his girl friend and son.

I think it's the yin and yang complex. Most people that knew him said he could be the nicest man one minute and then flip the next minute. Even Genna said she came home and David was watching Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde on tv. He then asked her "That's Me Isn't It?" That's pretty deep.

Cuz when people won't leave you alone you begin to abuse them. Jr got caught in the middle of Ruff and his mom's madness. After Genna finished breaking up Sandra and Ruff...Sandra had the good sense to move on. Genna stayed...she got some parts of her man and still wasn't happy and sadly a child was in the middle who had to be constantly traumatized. A mother is supposed to look out for the welfare of their child...in other words Genna should have bounced and never looked back. She put her obsession for this man first.

Plus, I may be alone in this observation but as I was looking at the pictures, which I assume was mostly the wanna be widow's, it was a little disturbing to me. It made me think of something that Tony Turner said about Ruff. While some of the pictures look like typical pictures of family or being on vacation, some of them struck me like Ruff had to be on all the time. It seemed like every time you turned around, it was like 'damn did she did take pics when he slept and took a dump, too'? I mean, it's like he got no peace and he constantly had to be 'David Ruffin the star' to her. I mean, some of them he looked genuinely happy but sometimes, it looked he didn't want to be there. Body language says a lot to me and again, I could be wrong, but I think she put up with all of that violence because of who she wanted him to be and not who he actually was. David always seemed to be a rebel who only tolerated conformity up to a certain extent. It's just like Bees said: she wouldn't leave him alone plus she seemed to relish the so-called 'star' lifestyle that she craved so badly. Basically, she liked the attention being with Ruff, too!

Hey everyone..my thoughts on DR was the fact that i feel Miss Sandra and The Children should have had more time to this interview instead of Genna taking that majority....Miss Sandra loved DR and it made me sad that their family got ruined to the fact of groupies comin on around and that he had the terrible childhood that his father made for him....my heart goes out to everyone of his Children and Miss Sandra because they saw him strugglin thru and didnt judge him....

I saw unsung yesterday finally 3/9/12. Bees: I agree David Jr. statement was profounding.
Brandy: I too am glad Mrs. Sandra Ruffin cleared up the fact that she was married when Genna was in the picture.
Common I agree with you I am glad they did not go into the relationship with Tammi.
BTW: why does genna have Ruffin as her last name?
I wish they had played more of his solo songs like “just let me hold you” ya’ll know the rest. To me they played too much of temptations music. But if you want the public to know more about his career post temptations, they should have played more of solo hits other than “walk away from love.”
All his kids, and nephew did a wonderful job. I am glad jr. cleared up “dad didn’t die in crack house, he died in the hospital”. And Nedra looks just like her dad

The wanna be widow took his name to simply hustle it to make money for herself and stake whatever 'claim' she feels she's entitled to in his legacy. I, too, wished they spent more time talking about his music, particularly, his work with Van McCoy. Van McCoy was one of the most prolific and popular producers of the 70s and to only mention 'Walk Away from Love' was a travesty. They could have talked to Charles Kipps, his partner and co-writer of 'Walk Away'. Charles Kipps is very much alive and writes for tv series. He also has a website. I'm sure he would have been more than happy to talk about his work with Ruffin. I had the same issue with Bobby Womack's segment. They focused entirely on the scandals and tragedies in Bobby's life and not giving equal time to his music. BTW, when you have time, take a listen to the radio interview that Ms. Sandra, Nedra, Cheryl and Ms. Sandra's sister, Belinda did with David Washington. Much more insightful about David and Ms. Sandra talks about Tammi Terrell.

lovechild and airhead:
It was sad because we all know how it was going to end. I see jr in a different light after watching him on Unsung. He really has matured.
I don't know if either of you had a chance to listen to the radio interview, but what I thought was interesting is despite all the problems and issues that David and Sandra had, she was still close to him. Of course, there is difficulties in any relationship but it seemed there was alot of admiration for each other. I never sensed any hostility or bitterness on Sandra's part, despite the way she has been treated. I agree with mellow's statement about Sandra being graceful and dignify through out her relationship with Ruff.
