Board,
I am watching tempts without the tenors (der, eddie, and paul) and I am trying to control myself from laughing. What happen to the style, the looks, and the moves better yet tempts.
I can't take this anymore Dennis trying to hold the group together. Melvin looks like father time and O trying to learn how to dance this is utterly ridiculous

QNew! That's exactly why "I" stopped following The Tempts. To me they were The "Imitations". For all the reasons you just stated. Ms. Molly, I don't understand why the group did not retired from the music business. If I did not know better, I would think tempts were a new group a bunch of nobodies. The two orginals{O and Melvin} members need to sit down some where who told them they can dance hell who told them they can sing?

Why should they have to retire, did you ever stop to think that they loved performing? If you don't like that particular lineup fine don't listen to them, but they should not have retired.

For me, they did not have to physically retire. I retired them in my mind when Dennis left the first time. After that, they became a different group altogether. Yes, they made some good music, but not the standard of the Classics. For Lovers Only is one of their better albums/cd's. Everyone ought to have that one. I don't listen to the newer lineups very often cause I ain't trying to hear what they are singing. The reality is they do have fans and they have a right to want these guys to continue to perform...just like I got a right to ignore them...it's my personal preference! Just like the Four Tops...some of their fans want them to retire because they can't stand Theo singing Levi's songs...and Theo is one helluva singer...but they just ain't trying to hear him sing Levi's material.

I agree Bees. In my mind they retired after Ruffin left. Although I liked DE . They stopped being The Temptations "I" was accustomed to hearing and seeing. Here and there they have recorded songs I liked, but to me it was never the same. I guess it just comes down to personal preference. And of course everyone is entitled to "their" own opinion. The Temptations to me was the C5.
You can get "new" people to perform under an already popular and establshed name but it doesn't make them the same as the "originals". The Miracles without Smokey. The Tops without Levi. The Commodores without Lionel. New Edition without Bobby Brown even NSYNC without Justin Timberlake. The name stays the same, but the group is not the same. The Tempts without Ruffin,Eddie and Paul were never the same.

Some people are fans of music others are fans of personalities. David Ruffin is my favorite Temptation but never would *I* disrespect ANY singer who has EARNED his place in this or any group for that matter as a wannabe or imitation, It is fine if a particular lineup is not your cup of tea but the insults really are not neccesary.
* note this is not directed to anyone in particular, only expressing my opinion.

Your're right some people are fans of music, some are fans of a personality. I don't call it disrespect of anybody's talent when a comparison is made between the real and the copy. I happen to have been fortunate enough to "see" the C5 perform. I also saw the "Imitations" perform. The latter were inferior to the former IMO.. I feel as if you are being insulting by not respecting the opinions of others on this subject. Fine if you are a Tempt fan. I on the other hand was a fan of the C5 music. "That" line up was responsible for the "Classics" that we enjoy today. Making a "hit" has been done by many groups/artist. Not so with Classic's. No Tempt "line up" can match or even duplicate "My Girl","Aint Too Proud","I Wish It Would Rain" ,"Just My Imagination","Don't Look Back" ect. David Ruffin is also my favorite Temptation. Whose to say who falls into the love of music and the love of a personality catagories? Since it all based on "individual" prefrences. I favor a group/artist because of the talent not because of their name. I can't see where anybody was insulted other then the posters with opinions different than yours.

Luke,, I think it comes down to personal choice; I don’t like O’s boys mainly because of their lack of contribution to the group. The group was established on the backbone of 5 young men (David, Eddie, Paul, O, and Melvin) dreams and 2 men vision (Smokey Robinson and Barry Gordy) They said to themselves: Hey world we are just as good as our white counterparts we can sing and dance too. The seven young men have accomplished their dreams because today we continue to hear “My Girl” Fast forward,, 2004 four of the original members made the transactions and one BACK STABBER remains yes I said it!!! No good wannabe backstabber who continues to fool the public with his none contribution. Otis is the reason we have discord in the tempt environment the blame needs to put where it start from O no one else. He knew the pain and struggles of his tempt brothers to become international stars but, no that was not good enough he write books everyone else except himself. Moving on to the next subject of “EARNED” I am baffle what did they “wannabes” earn the right to come on stage and sing ‘My Girl’ or “The Way You Do The Things You Do”? I thought David and Eddie sung those songs ‘wannabe crew’ where is the originality at in the heavens?? Nope in my opinion they did not earned their spots to become Temptations they are O’s employees not “Tempting Temptation” If I was a wannabe, I get down on my hands and knees and thank the founders for allowing me to tell their stories by singing their songs. Like DER said: No one can sing ‘My Girl’ Just My Imagination’ and Cloud 9 ‘NO ONE’

If you are baking a chocolate cake today and decide on tomorrow you want to bake another one, but decide to make it coconut instead. Will you still call it a chocolate cake? NO! The ingredients have changed, therefore, it becomes a different cake...cake nonetheless. Same with The Tempts. The lineup has changed therefore they have become an altogether different group operating under The Tempts name. They are not Tempts...they are just a group! You can't change the formula and call it the same!
