Molly, Do you know WHO had David's award and sold it? How could anbody even think of putting a price on something so priceless, something David so deserved and achieved. Whoever bought it certainly has something to treasure forever. karralyn

I agree that the Classic Five should have received a grammy for "My Girl" and "Your My Everything". I admire Dennis Edwards and he deserved to be inducted in the HOF,because he was one of the voices. But I also feel as though the Tempts would had been inducted and won grammies without Dennis. David had style and showmanship that added flavor to the group.

Dennis Edwards made an enormous contribution to the Temptaions and he deserved to get inducted into the HOF along with the Classic 5, but was he solely responsible for their first Grammy? No. I could be wrong by saying this, but I believe that there were a number of reasons why Cloud 9 won. Firstly, Cloud 9 was a departure from the music that was previously performed by the Tempts, or any other Motown act for that matter. It wasn't romantic. It was edgy and reflected the times. That made it groundbreaking, in a sense. Secondly, it was the first song by the Tempts that featured a swing lead. Each member's voice was showcased. I know that happened in spiritual and gospel music, but I don't know how often that happened in popular music. Lastly, since each member had a turn singing lead a listener could hear and better appreciate his talent. David Ruffin's voice was so awesome that the Tempts had to know that if they were going to survive without him they would have to prove to the public that each member was good enough to hold his own and capable of helping the group stay strong. That means that while Dennis' voice helped them to win the Grammy, so did Eddie's, Paul's, Melvin's and even Otis'. Anyway, if David hadn't been fired and they released Cloud 9 with his voice the Tempts still would have won a Grammy because it helped to usher in a new sound of Motown music.
