Well I just watched it. It's so many things...but so very sad, on so many different levels.
I am going to take this opportunity to say that I posted in the other recent thread about Genna, something that was making fun of her picture on the Zazzle clothes. I knew when I did that I was breaking my own Rule of Life which is not to make fun of others. But I am only human and I succumbed to temptation!! I will not be doing that anymore. Genna has enough to deal with, as do we all, myself included.
Peace

Here’s my 2 cents:
To me the only thing worth noting about this interview is when Genna said she had no idea David was an alleged crack addict because technically he was not a ‘crack addict’ when they were together. If she and David’s relationship ended in 1974, then I highly doubt Ruffin was addicted to crack since what is now widely known as ‘crack cocaine', did not hit the streets until the mid 1980s. In addition, If David was doing any drugs pre-1974, then I would think it was probably cocaine unless he was into other stuff such as speed, lsd, heroin, angel dust etc.
Furthermore, even if crack cocaine was hypothetically available in the 1970s, Genna's attempt to act like she did not know David had a drug addiction problem in this interview, is totally disingenuous when she clearly mentioned in her 'memoir', he allegedly did drugs in the 1960s. As a matter of fact, she specifically called David and Tammi Terrell “druggies” and stated how she heard they supposedly liked to licked each other's nostrils.
I will never say David Ruffin was without fault, but after reading her book and listening to a few of her interviews, I can’t help but think she ‘borrows’ from what other people have either said or written about David and incorporates that information to form her own narrative. I think she is trying to illicit sympathy while simultaneously attempting to capitalize on David’s name and his fame by consistently hurling insults.
I don't buy her shtick at all.

Very well stated citystars. All very valid points. One last thing I would add is that she mentions the physical abuse didn't start until 1970, and of course that is the same year that Tammi died, so there's no doubt that his grief was driving him in many ways.

I only have one issue with her. If you hate David so much, then don't make money off his name. Create your own lane. It seems malicious. Genna was a grown woman. If Ruff was dogging her out, she should of left him earlier. Don't stay( by your own choice) and then complain afterwards.
I respect the late great Tammi Terrell. David and her had their issues but she didn't dog David out around other people. I remember on her Unsung her family didn't necessarily feel sorry for her at this point. She chose to stay despite the abuse. She wouldn't listen at certain points. When she had enough; she left. And her and Ruff were still close until she passed.

Rufferino,
Good point about the 1970 reference.
I would also like to add I really can’t wrap my brain around why she would even agree to appear on this radio show to talk about David abusing her if she’s also trying to peddle “Genna and David Ruffin” T-shirts on the internet. It’s nutty, very very bizarre and makes absolutely no sense.

I know it does seem contradictory. What I got out of the interview is that she is trying to be a domestic violence educator. While that's laudible, I can't help but feel that she has a lot more work to do with herself before she's ready to take on the task/role of helping others. She still has a lot of bitterness about her own abuse and this is what everybody is picking up on, and it comes across as hypocritical. But at the same time, I think she has definitely made progress. I just feel she's not yet ready to help others. She had a tough life, with a lot of issues already when she and David met. I oughta know...I've got my own issues too!

Rufferino,
My take on the interview is a little different because I think she is trying to use her relationship with David that just happened to be supposedly violent to gain recognition because of who he was. I don't think her story would have generated much public interest if David's last name had been Smith and he was a bus driver instead of an entertainer. If you remove David’s name from the equation, you have story, however it’s not as compelling.
I don't think she can be a real Speaker or Counselor of domestic abuse issues when she is also trying to financially capitalize on selling t-shirts of herself and her alleged abuser on the internet. It’s ridiculous and I feel she is doing a disservice to the many victims of domestic abuse who are seriously trying to move on with their lives.
Perhaps it’s just me, but I feel she clings to the issue of the domestic violence because she knows the people will be sympathetic to her simply because of the rumors surrounding David’s alleged abuse of Tammi Terrell. I wonder had David not been accused of ‘abusing Tammi first, would the public be so willing to readily accept her story without additional scrutiny?

I was kinda reluctant to post anything about genna in the new year as it's the same old, same old with her. I don't know what else is there to add. She is obviously very obsessed and bitter with a dead man whom she never made peace with in life and obviously, not in death either.
Her main problem is that she has not created her OWN identity and the fact that she keeps harping on stuff from almost 40 years ago, says alot about her mental state. No one says she should forget what happened to her but she has not move on, mentally and spiritually. I'm sorry. All that 'born again' stuff and you're still bashing this man plus changing your name to the abuser's name. She blew her chance to make a life for herself outside of Ruffin and waited until a tempts movie to write about a book about him. We all have issues in our lives but some way or some how, we find a way to work through them. You have take some kind of responsibility and accountablity for your actions.
She never talks about what SHE DID AFTER leaving Ruffin. The main content of her book was all about 'what Ruffin did, didn't do, or how violent or ignorant he was'. I mean, it obvious to me that she has NOTHING else to talk about besides Ruffin and that's the sad part. Besides seeing flying ufo's and working briefly as a go-go dancer, what else did genna do with her life? That's the main thing. You have to have your own as woman instead of wrapping your identity into someone else. The mere fact that she changed her name to 'Ruffin' speaks volumes to this. She needs more than becoming a 'born again', she needs to therapy. She shouldn't advocate counselling anyone until she gets herself together.

I do feel sorry for Genna. She has some issues and I pray for her.
Not trying to drag her down but she was on Facebook a couple of years ago. I added her. Keep in mind I had never met her or talked to her. I left her a message saying that I enjoyed her book and wished her the best.
Her reply (after one message) was asking me to be her manager and get her speaking engagements. I was shocked. I know some might think Im lying, but that's the 100% truth. I personally couldn't make something up that good.
I of course declined. I have no knowledge of that business. It was very strange. No disrespect to her, but it was sad. It's like she's desperate for outlets.
