Well, BroMan, I disagree. That is the problem that because a singer is black, that they should 'stick to what they know'. A singer should be able to express themselves anyway they chose. It's bad enough that the industry keeps artists pigeonholed in one genre, but when the artist limits themselves, it stifles their creativity. And black artists already get the short end of the stick. So I say, if David had lived, he should've gone for it. That's my opinion & I'm stickin to it. LOL! ;D ;D ;D

Hello I was thinking David can sing country because he was a southerner and why not have him be versatile and not be typcasted,Lionel richie said he got the country influence by growing up and hearing country and western on the radio in Alabama it had nothing to do with being black or white it's just exposure.Plus country music was influenced by African folk music ,black gospel and the banjo came from Africa so blacks did have an influence on country.

Hello David Fan David Ruffin did a reggae flavored song on the Ruffin/Kendrick album called'Don't Know why you're Dreaming"so he was versatile.

David Picked his choices R&B SOUL GOSPEL ... I can not imagine him singin' no country! ... lol ;D No, he didn't pick his choices. The whole purpose of Motown was to expose their artists to array of various musical genres. If you don't feel that David shouldn't sing country, then he shouldn't have sung standard pop tunes either. To me, it is very unfair to caterogize & put black artists in just one box because they come from a 'gospel' background. Hell, Marian Anderson was from a gospel background & sang Opera! As I mentioned before, a good example of country, mixed in with R&B/Pop, is the Commodores 'Sail On'. David could've definitely done something like that. I think there is a perception of 'country music' as just a lot of twang singing & hokey dokey music. If a song is tailored & crafted around a singer's range & style, it could work. David could've done a country song without it being corny. David's voice was exceptional & it sounded flexible enough where he could've done it. Hell, if Millie Jackson & Gladys Knight(who sang background on a Kenny Rogers record!) could do it, why not David Ruffin?? The man's talents was limitless! ;D ;D

Abe, that's what I'm saying. It's all about verstility & style. Just add on to what you said, the famed Carter Family(June Carter Cash's family & Johnny Cash's inlaws) were heavily influenced by the black church, especially hymns & spirituals. So hey, anything is possible.

David was from the South and he was Black. However niether of these facts have anything to do with the genre of music his voice was suited for. David was a R&B singer. Had he sang country song lyrics,it still would not have been a country song. He was not a country singer. If Willie Nelson sang Aint Too Proud his stlye would have made it a country song, because Nelson was a country singer. David is one of the greatest R&B singers of all time, but that doesn't mean he would have been successful in all genre's of music. I don't think any singer can sing every genre of music. Actually I don't rememberr David ever expressing a desire to sing country. In his Motown years he was provided with writers that wrote songs with his particular voice and style in mind. Motown wasn't trying to cross over into country music.I don't think his career was hurt or would have been enhanced had he sang country. There are many R&B songs I don't think he would have sang well. Ohhh Baby Baby,Just My imagination,Cloud Nine,Ball of Confusion just to name a few. David couldn't sing a standard like Paul Williams could. I think Motown made the best decision in the material he recorded. Plus R&B was where his heart was. That's why his music has the longevity it has.

I agree Abe. But I don't believe David was typecasted. David loved the genre of music he sang. Black music has had an impact on every genre of music except maybe opera. David could not have sang opera either. Nor would he have been a good rapper. But he was great singing R&B. ;D ;D

I think David could have could have sung country and western songs. His voice had so much feeling in it. And most country songs are tear jerker's. There are a some rock singers now days that I have seen on TV singing country and western songs. Kid Rock singing Picture, I went out and got that CD and I cant play it with out crying I would love to hear David sing that song. I think Charley Pride is the only black country and western singer out there and I havent seen or hurd him sing in a long time.

I know thie original question was hypothetical . But it brings up the question of where was his fan base going to come from had he sang country? Back in the day we spent our 1.00 on music we liked. If an artist put out a song we didn't like we did not buy it. The Temptation's and Ruffin's solo fan base was definitely not country music lovers. We were trying to shake a tail feather. People weren't going to buy a record just because his voice was on it. As far as I know Charlie Pride is the only Black Country Singer. I don't own any of his records. I don't even know what his songs are. Motown knew what the fans wanted to hear and were willing to buy. So did Ruffin. I agree with der there are some moving lyrics that have been made into country songs, that Ruffin could have sang. But once he sang these lyrics they wouldn't be country,it would be R&B. Rueben Studard from AI sang "Sweet Home Alabama" when they were singing the country genre. He didn't sing it like a country song. Gospel yes Ruffin would have torn some gospel up,but with his voice and style I don't know how he could have pulled off Country.
